Pool Pump Troubleshooting: Common Causes and Easy Fixes

Pool Pump Troubleshooting: Common Causes and Easy Fixes

If pool circulation feels weak, you might notice cloudy water, debris collecting, or uneven chemical readings. The good news is that many pump problems are caused by a few common issues that are easy to check.

Step 1: Check the baskets

Start with the basics:

  • Empty the skimmer basket

  • Empty the pump basket

  • Check for cracks or warping

A clogged basket can reduce flow quickly and make the pump work harder than it needs to.

Step 2: Look for air leaks

If you see bubbles under the pump lid or air coming through the return jets, air may be getting into the system.

Common places to check include:

  • Pump lid o-ring

  • Drain plugs

  • Unions and fittings

  • Valves near the pump

Sometimes the fix is simply cleaning and reseating an o-ring, or replacing a worn gasket.

Step 3: Confirm water level

If the water level drops too low, the skimmer can pull in air. Keep your water level around the middle of the skimmer opening for steady circulation.

Step 4: Check your filter pressure

A dirty filter can restrict flow. If your filter pressure is higher than normal, clean or backwash the filter and recheck circulation.

Step 5: Confirm valves are set correctly

If a valve is partially closed or switched to the wrong line, it can reduce suction and lower flow. This can happen after cleaning, maintenance, or seasonal openings.

Step 6: Consider an impeller clog

If baskets are clean and there is still low flow, debris may be caught in the impeller. If you are comfortable doing basic maintenance, turn off power and inspect the pump according to the manufacturer instructions.

When to call a professional

If you notice any of the following, it is best to stop and contact a pool professional:

  • Pump will not start or keeps tripping breakers

  • Loud grinding or screeching noise

  • Leaks coming from the motor area

  • Electrical smell or overheating

Common parts people replace first

If you are troubleshooting a circulation issue, these are commonly replaced:

  • Pump lid o-ring

  • Drain plug o-rings

  • Pump basket or skimmer basket

  • Pressure gauge

  • Unions or gaskets

If you share your pump model number, we can help you find the correct replacement parts.
